Slope angle over satellite imagery and 3D terrain, with contours and hillshade on a basemap built for terrain rather than streets. Tap anywhere for the slope under your finger.

How it works

01

Turn on slope angle

The Slope Angle layer shades steep ground over satellite or 3D terrain. It draws between zoom levels 10 and 13, where the elevation model has real detail.

02
The terrain sheet for a tapped point: slope, elevation, sun window and the steepest ground nearby

Tap the ground

The terrain sheet computes slope on your device from the elevation model. It also shows the sun window, sun hours and the steepest ground nearby.

03

Tilt into 3D

Full 3D terrain with hillshade and contour lines. Turn on Aspect to see which way each slope faces, fly over a route before you commit to it, or replay a recorded track in 3D.

Sources / What it does not do

Sources
  • Elevation: Copernicus DEM, NRCan HRDEM and USGS 3DEP, served from Aventerra's own tiles.
  • Satellite imagery: Mapbox. Sentinel-2 summer composite from Copernicus (Pro).
  • Basemap: Aventerra's self-hosted vector tiles with hillshade and contours.

What it does not do
  • The slope layer draws from zoom 10 to 13. Zoom in closer and it stays on the screen but adds no new detail.
  • The terrain sheet averages slope over a cell of the elevation model. It is not a reading from a clinometer.
  • Satellite, topo contours and slope angle all save with an offline area. Satellite saves at a lower detail ceiling than it shows online.
  • Recent Satellite (Pro) covers southern Quebec for now. Forest loss covers Canada, Alaska and the United States north of 37°N.
  • ProSentinel-2 imagery
  • ProForest loss layer

Frequently asked

Is slope angle free?

Yes. Slope angle and snow depth are safety layers and stay free on every plan.

Does slope work offline?

Yes. Add the Slope Angle layer to an offline area and the shading comes with it. The terrain sheet's on-device slope also works wherever you have downloaded the area.

What is the forest loss layer?

A Pro layer showing where tree cover has been lost recently, coloured by year. Useful for spotting new cut blocks and burns before you plan a line through them.
